Sailing Gear

When sailing it is important to be properly clothed for the elements you will be in.  Of course it is common sense that what you will wear is determined by where you are sailing.  It would be ill advised to be overdressed and therefore get overheated, and also the opposite is true, the fun of sailing ends when you spend the whole day shivering to stay warm.  So be sure to think through what temperatures you might experience while out on your craft.

It goes without saying that you really should always be prepared for inclement weather or a totally unpredictable situation. So let’s consider what types of weather you might encounter, and the proper clothing for the situation.

Hot and Humid sailing:

If you are sailing in warm weather and in a more stable environment (inland), then often casual summer clothing will be adequate for your time out on the water.  Shorts and a t-shirt, comfortable shoes (preferably with a covered toe), sunglasses, hat, and of course, SUNSCREEN.  Don't forget the sunscreen, or you will be in sad shape the next couple of days.

Polarized sunglasses are a great help when sailing on the water- they really cut down on the glare and enable you to see into the water.  Of course bring another layer with you, just in case the weather turns cooler, or rain blows in on your adventure.

Be sure to not overdress, as this can cause you to sweat and become overheated quickly, which can result in dehydration.  That is another excellent point- bring plenty of drinking water to go along with your properly clothed body!

Special Equipment for Offshore Sailing:

If you intend to sail offshore, consider investing in foul weather gear.  This type of gear provides hardcore protection against any form of weather, and it will help you to have the most enjoyable sailing trip.

The most important thing you need is an offshore jacket. There are a number of options and you must take your time before choosing. Choose a large jacket that can allow several layers of clothing underneath. It must start right under the chin to protect the neck and extend below the bottom. Proper sailing jackets have 2 closures at the neck, the outer zipper,or velcro, and the inner neoprene closure. The inner zipper makes the jacket completely waterproof, which is obviously important.

The best pants are bib-style and waterproof. Check whether there are Velcro closures on the cuff to seal the pants around the boots. Always buy boots which are 2 sizes larger than your normal shoe size. This makes them fit well when thick woolen socks are worn underneath and if you have a mishap and end up overboard you can take off the boots easily. Avoid wearing the boots on land since they have soft soles that can become damaged when walking on hard surfaces.

Basic Equipment for Sailing in a Dinghy:

Remember, when you are sailing offshore, your main target would be to choose gear that will keep your body warm. Neoprene wetsuits are perfect for this purpose, especially if you are sailing in a dinghy. The reinforced areas of this suit preserve body heat and help you to resist the cold breeze or splash of waves. You also need a pair of neoprene gloves to protect your hands from friction and keep them warmer. Fingerless neoprene gloves are available and allow flexible movement of the hands and fingers.

What to Wear Underneath and Other Important Facts:

On the sea you can expect any form of weather. Wear several layers of clothes underneath your jacket. Always choose thermal undergarments and on the top layer, wear light synthetic materials like sweaters or pants. Jeans or cotton garments should be strictly avoided since they tend to absorb moisture quickly and very soon becomes uncomfortable. As mentioned above, thick woolen socks are perfect for your feet. Your gear should be light colored with reflector tape attached to make it more visible in the night. And finally, carefully protect your head since it is where you lose the majority of your body heat. Wear beanies or jackets with hoodies for protection. Follow all these steps and you are good to go for a sail, and will stay dry and comfortable along the way!
